5G

What is 5G?

5G is the latest global wireless standard. It’s the fifth generation wireless network following 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G. The fastest wireless standard to date, 5G is designed to connect everything from smartphones to autonomous vehicles to industrial machinery and beyond.Over time, 5G will replace existing wireless networks to provide mobile users with better speeds, lower latencies, and more consistent wireless experiences. However, the extreme improvements of 5G will also enable a massive digital transformation that’s been referred to as the fourth industrial revolution. The Internet of Things (IoT) will use 5G to facilitate communication between billions of sensors in factories, farms, smart cities, and more. The low latencies of 5G enable real-time communication between machines and sensors to make instant data-driven decisions.

Why is 5G Better?

5G wireless technology delivers extremely high peak data speeds, ultra low latency, high reliability, and more network capacity. The performance of 5G is thanks in part to the technology’s access to millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies above 24 GHz, which provide much greater throughput than traditional low and mid bands. However, 5G can efficiently use spectrum resources from sub 3 GHz (used in 4G) to beyond 100 GHz.5G is based on a method of modulation called orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM modulates a digital signal across several different channels to reduce interference. 5G uses OFDM in combination with an enhanced 5G NR (New Radio) air interface.

With its highly efficient spectrum use, 5G can provide 100x more network capacity and efficiency than 4G networks. 5G can achieve up to 20 Gbps peak data rates and average data rates of over 100 Mbps, which is significantly faster than 4G. Users of 5G networks will be able to download an 8K movie 500% faster than if they were using 4G.

5G Public Safety Applications Discussion Article

5G Public Safety Applications

It is reasonably certain that the opportunities and challenges of the connection between IoT and 5G implementation within the public safety topic will be driven by the initiatives of connected “smart cities”. As more information is collected and shared within municipalities, situational awareness also increases, and public safety agencies will make more informed decisions in how they respond.

To gain a clearer picture of how 5G Network coverage will impact the public safety sector and expand the capabilities, we reached out to a panel of experts. Our 5G Public Safety panel includes Carlos Tobar, Manager of Emergency Systems, City of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, Wayne Black, Chief Technical Officer at Freedom Products at Astronics Test Systems, and Tim O’Brien, Director of Strategic Development, Public Safety at Bird RF.
