Bridge Inspection

Drones are being put to work inspecting transportation infrastructure and specifically bridges, which have typically been challenging and costly to inspect.

Traditional inspection methods have included using an aerial work platform (AWP), or deploying under-bridge inspection vehicles or crews with ropes and ladders to manually inspect and document any structural stress or damage. Lanes of traffic often have to be diverted while crews and equipment are operating, and the equipment and trained staff are expensive to deploy.

Using drones for inspection significantly reduces costs and increases effectiveness because of the ability for gimbalized drones to do under-bridge inspection looking upward, as well as aerial views from above. With the ability to fly in close proximity to the bridge, drones can obtain high-quality images and capture data about the status of the bridge for analysis. Use of drones eliminates the need for risky rope and ladder inspections, and impact on traffic flow is reduced.
